Therefore we can conclude that the theme of the poem is ‘wasted youth’, much like another of Owens poems ‘Arms and the boy’. ‘Doomed’ means not being able to fufil your destiny ahead and ‘youth’ is an emphasis of soldiers age and innocence. ‘Anthem’ is a song that is very well known, usually strong and powerful. They typically have 14 lines, the first half of the poem having 8 lines (an octave) and the second half 6 lines, (a sestet).įrom the title alone, we can already identify that the subject of this poem is something Owen feels very passionate about. We can identify a ‘Petrarchen sonnet’ form by the division of the poem.
